WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- With John Edwards' trial finally wrapped up, one Wilmington woman who worked closely with the former senator and his family speaks out about the verdict. A jury found John Edwards not guilty Thursday on one count of accepting illegal campaign contributions. A mistrial has been declared for the other five counts. Nan Bozarth has known the Edwards family since 2004 and helped raise money for his presidential campaign. She has been following the former senator's fall from grace since the beginning and says she hopes everyone can finally just move on. “My hope for him and the family is that he goes home and raises his children and be done with it,” Bozarth says. Bozarth was crushed when Edwards' affair went public, but looks forward to his acquittal ending the years of unending controversy. “He’s been punished in more ways than anyone can imagine for his moral and ethical wrongdoings,” she says. However, some in the Port City are not so forgiving. “Atrocious. Let alone that it was a North Carolina senator, it's corrupt,” says Gil Rose, who lives in Wilmington. Even Edwards admits he was morally in the wrong, but his not guilty verdict for campaign fraud has received mixed reactions. “He was clearly guilty of committing campaign finance fraud and hopefully justice will be served later on,” Rose says. “Lets focus on the economy and jobs and go forward and let him go away,” Bozarth says. “Let him raise his kids and let them live their lives.”
