Unless a person is trained in how to approach and assist a swimmer in distress, attempting to help by swimming out to the victim is a surefire way to have a double drowning.
I encourage everyone to get the appropriate training from the Red Cross, but until you receive it remember to call 911 and look for an alternative rescue method. Remember "reach, throw, row, (and only if you are trained) go."
