Leland woman arrested for faking her own abduction

LELAND, NC (WWAY) -- A Leland woman is in jail for making up her own abduction.

Leland Police received a report Saturday that Ashley Hutchins had been abducted and was being held for an undisclosed ransom. Hutchins was found Sunday in Winnabow during a collaborative investigation between the Leland Police, FBI and the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office.

After investigators questioned her, Hutchins revealed that she had fabricated her own abduction.

Hutchins is charged with extortion. She is in the Brunswick County Jail under a $250,000 bond.
