WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The group behind a petition to block taxpayer money for a ballpark in Wilmington is farther from its goal than originally thought.
After double-checking, the Board of Elections now says the petition is 45 signatures short, in part because there were some repeated signatures and the wording on some of the petitions did not match. Friday the Board of Elections said the petition was 14 signatures short of the 2,842 needed, so organizers turned in 73 more signatures. Those have not yet been verified.
If the group gets the necessary verified signatures, city council must adopt the petition as an ordinance or put it up for a public vote.
