WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Wilmington Police are stepping up efforts to figure out the biggest problem areas in the community. In what police call part of their focus deterrence program, officers will go door-to-door with a survey tomorrow.

"The goal is to help establish a relationship, to let them know that the police department really does care, and we want to hear what they have to say," WPD Community Resource Coordinator Linda Rawley said.

Police want to hear from you, but do you really want to hear from them?

About 20 officers will hit the streets Wednesday on the north side of the city rain or shine with a survey. They will ask residents how they can make the area safer.

"If we can focus in on those areas that are problems, those individuals that are problems, then we can help to change the result and try to change the dynamic and certainly the quality of life in that community," Rawley said.

Some people who live in the survey area told us off camera that they don't want to talk to police, because of possible threats from their neighbors. Others feel a bit different.

"They should answer the questions. That's all," said James Carpenter, who lives in the survey area. "Why be afraid of the police? Serve and protect. That's what it says on the side of the car. Serve and protect. So why should you be afraid of the police?"

Police say they chose the area because it is a hot spot for violent crimes.

Other questions on the survey include the availability of weapons and how much lack of respect there is toward law enforcement.

Police say if people don't want to talk face to face, they can always call.
