NC fracking bill one step closer to law on override

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- The Senate has voted to override Gov. Beverly Perdue's veto of a bill that would authorize fracking in North Carolina, but the House still must go along to cancel her objections to the measure on environmental and other concerns.

Senators voted 29-13 Monday in favor of overriding the veto Perdue issued on Sunday. The margin is more than the three-fifths majority required for an override.

The legislation sets in motion a process that would allow certain forms of shale gas exploration and production in the state.

The measure directs a state panel and other agencies to develop rules and regulations for the process to drill and collect the natural gas by October 2014. The Legislature would have to sign off at a later date before actual permits could be issued.
