SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) -- Patriotism was in the air as the City of Southport and thousands of others came together to celebrate the 4th of July.
Southport is famous for its Independence Day celebration. The North Carolina 4th of July Festival traces its origins back to the late 1700s, and it is thought to be one of the oldest celebrations of its kind in the Tar Heel State.
Vendors agreed it is the best place to be for the holiday.
"It's probably one of the best 4th of July celebrations in the state," vendor Henry Hall.

Visitors and residents celebrating in Southport enjoyed a variety of activities, including a craft fair, parade, face painting and more to show their patriotic spirit.
Many said the 4th of July is their favorite holiday.
