WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The morning of July 4, 2011, Carol Ann Johnson, 59, was found dead in her home off Pine Valley Drive in Wilmington. Now on the anniversary of her murder, her family continues to search for answers in hopes her case will not go cold, and that her killer is caught.

"I think it's very cowardly for them to not come forward," Johnson's niece Melanie White said. "I hope that something inside them changes and they they want to turn themselves in."

White contacted us on behalf of her family to plead with the community not to forget her aunt.

"She was fun and caring and creative," White said. "She was just a lot of fun to go with. I remember all the concerts we'd go to in the summer. She used to make my costumes for me for Halloween. She was very creative. She was a very dear aunt to me."

Police say Johnson was stabbed to death in her home and discovered lifeless by her fiance.

"It's surreal," White said. "We've never had anybody in our family who was murdered. It's quite shocking and still kind of hard to swallow. We miss her so much every single day. But we are hopeful, and we are really praying that we will find what happened and that justice will be done."

White said she and her family have a great relationship with investigators from the Wilmington Police Department. She remains hopeful and asks that anyone with any information come forward.

Because of the holiday, we could not reach Wilmington Police investigators for an update on the case.
