COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A federal grant will help law enforcement in Columbus County get on the same page. The county has received a Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) of $14,683 to increase communications and information sharing among law enforcement agencies in the county.

"We, like most others in our country, are trying to reach out to every source available to ensure that our officers and staff have the equipment needed to perform their duties," Columbus County Sheriff Chris Batten said in a statement.

The Columbus County grant will fund the purchase of a portable fingerprint machine and a printer for the Columbus County Sheriff's Office to modernize communications between county agencies.

The Department of Justice established the Edward J. Byrne JAG Program to support a broad range of initiatives based on the needs of specific communities.
