WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Police have a man in custody after they say he threatened to jump into the Cape Fear River in downtown Wilmington after a foot chase.

Police spokesman Det. Kevin Smith says police chased the man after they spotted him in a stolen vehicle around 6th Street. Smith says the man took off toward the river.

Officers said the man was standing on the bulkhead near PPD and threatening to jump in. Police called for a boat to assist them. Just before 1 p.m., officers cleared the scene after they said they took the suspect into custody.
