WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Our coastal community is no stranger to severe weather. Although Hurricane Season has been quiet so far, we're heading into the most active months. That's why the Red Cross launched a new free mobile app Wednesday all about keeping you safe.

Among other features, the Red Cross Hurricane App has a way to let your friends and family know you made it through the storm.

"You can go into the app, and you can post a message to any of your social accounts or text message to any family or loved ones and let them know that you are safe," said Autum Mihm, Communications Director for the Eastern NC Region of the American Red Cross.

The "I'm Safe" function is one of many. The app, which is available for both iPhone and Android-powered devices, alerts you to any watches and warnings for your area. You can also use it as a flashlight. The app will locate shelters for you. There are also emergency checklists and quizzes to test your storm preparedness knowledge.

"As long as your phone is charged, you can pull the app up and access that information," Mihm said. "The same thing with after the disaster. After the disaster has passed, the hurricane has passed, you can go in there and look up helpful tips to help start with the recovery."

Another tool to consider as you get ready for storm season.

The Hurricane App is the second in a series of new Red Cross apps. A first aid tool is also available, and apps for tornadoes and earthquakes are coming soon.
