WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) - Wilmington resident Jay Ross is currently a member of the NFL Buffalo Bills. Ross used to play on the Green Bay Packers, but he never made it off the practice squad before being released by Green Bay around a year ago. Ross did earn a Super Bowl ring though because practice squad players are still given Super Bowl rings.

Until Thursday night the former New Hanover Wildcat owned the ring, but it now belongs to someone else. Ross put his ring on the auction block a few weeks ago. The internet auction stopped on Wednesday, but the bidding resumed in Baltimore on Thursday in conjunction with Heritage Auctions. As it turns out the Jay Ross ring was purchased for more $ 53,000.

Jay Ross will not keep the cash. He plans to help out local charities in Wilmington with the money that he'll receive. Back in July Ross tweeted his reasons for the donation. "For everybody that has been asking me, yes my Super Bowl ring is up for auction. It's nothing against the Packers. They are a great organization. By letting my ring go in the auction, I feel it will help out a lot with my charities, and I often felt like my sweat didn't contribute to the win. But don't worry. I will receive another one this year where I actually step foot on the field and contribute to the victory. Go place a bid and help me to help the children in my area of Wilmington, N.C. I love my city. It's what made me who I am today."

WILMINGTON,NC (Sharks release) -- Thursday night’s regular season finale between the Wilmington Sharks and the Thomasville HiToms has been cancelled due to rain.

The game got started on time, but the field was cleared at 7:30 with two outs in the bottom of the second inning due to lightning, though no rain was falling at the time. Wilmington was leading 1-0 and had nobody on base. After rain came and soaked the field over an extended period of time, the umpires eventually made the decision not to resume at approximately 9:15 p.m.

It was the fourth rain out for the Sharks this season that will not be made up, meaning the club finished the regular season playing just 52 of their originally scheduled 56 games.

Due to the cancellation, the result of the Columbia vs. Asheboro game has no effect on the standings because the Sharks rest at the fifth seed going into the Petitt Cup Playoffs. However, the Blowfish did beat the Copperheads 3-0 at McCrary Park.

Wilmington will host the Blowfish in Game 1 of the postseason on Saturday at 7pm. Dollar beer night prices will be in effect for the playoff game. The Sharks will then travel to Capital City Stadium on Sunday and, if game 3 is necessary, on Monday. The only regular season contest between the two teams was rained out, on July 1 in Columbia.

WILMINGTON,NC (Hammerheads release) -- The Wilmington Hammerheads are preparing for a weekend of back-to-back matches versus the Charleston Battery. The Hammerheads will face the Battery at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 3 at Blackbaud Stadium and again on Saturday, August 4 at Legion Stadium with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff time as they look to keep their unbeaten home streak alive.

The Hammerheads and the Battery recently encountered for the first time back on July 14 in Charleston with the Battery sweeping away with a 3-1 win. Battery midfielder Navion Boyd recorded an early goal in the first half, leaving the score 1-0 as the whistle signaled halftime. The Hammerheads came quick into the second half as forward Andriy Budnyy scored off a volley in the 47th minute to tie it up 1-1.

The Hammerheads held on with an even score until Battery forward Dane Kelly sent one into the back of the net outside of the 18-yard box in the 60th minute; followed by a Charleston goal from midfielder Nicki Paterson in the 65th minute from a long shot 35 yards out.

Charleston is currently one position above Wilmington in the USL PRO standings. With their next two matches against one another leaves the possibility of the Hammerheads jumping ahead of the Battery into the third position as the push for the playoffs continue.

Following the completion of both games this weekend, the Hammerheads have two matches remaining versus North Carolina rivals, the Charlotte Eagles. One of these matches is to still be finalized as it had to be rescheduled after the July 21 match at Charlotte Christian Stadium was cancelled due to unfit field conditions. The Hammerheads last home game is set for Saturday, August 18 at 7:30 p.m. in front of their fans at Legion Stadium.
