SHELBY, NC (AP) -- The man suspected of killing an 11-year-old Shelby girl more than 40 years ago has died. The Shelby Star reports that 83-year-old Thurman "Soupy" Price died over the weekend.

Brenda Sue Brown was 11 years old when she disappeared after walking her little sister to school in 1966. Her naked body was later found covered with branches, and police said the girl had been beaten to death with a rock. Price was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in 2007.

A year earlier, the Shelby Star published an extensive series about the case that police said led to several tips. Price's attorney told the paper he visited his client in the hospital a few days before his death. David Teddy says Price had always maintained his innocence.
