New Hanover still among most dangerous counties to drive

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Once again, New Hanover County ranks among the most dangerous to drive in the state of North Carolina.

A new analysis by AAA Carolinas of crash data in 2011 ranks New Hanover second for best chance of being in a collision and best chance of being in an injurious crash. That's based on per vehicle miles traveled. Bladen County was rated as one of the most dangerous places to drive a tractor trailer.

Overall, fatal crashes were down across the state eight percent from 2010 to 2011. AAA says rural counties continue to be the deadliest places to drive with the top five counties accounting for 5.4 percent of the state's total despite carrying only two percent of the state's vehicle miles traveled.
