NC woman gets White House honor for PTA work

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- A North Carolina woman is being honored at the White House for her dedication to the Parent Teacher Association.

The White House says it's honoring Mandy Patterson on Friday for her work with the PTA at Oak Grove Elementary School in Raleigh.

It's part of a day-long White House event as Obama administration officials welcome more than 150 PTA leaders from 41 states, the nation's capital, and U.S. military bases overseas.

Patterson was selected as one of a dozen extraordinary parents who have devoted their time and effort to their PTA chapters across the country.

Patterson and her husband Chris have three children. She has been a PTA leader for four years and started a children's charity that has distributed almost 75,000 books and new pajamas to underprivileged children.
