Movie filming may affect water service downtown

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Water service in downtown Wilmington may be affected today because of filming for the movie "We're the Millers."

The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority has authorized the production, which stars Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis, special use of water for special effects. Crews were scheduled to start shooting downtown at 6 a.m. They're slated to work until about 4 p.m.

"Movie production/special effects companies routinely use water from fire hydrants for special effects (aka rain scenes)," CFPUA spokeswoman Jacqueline Valade said in an e-mail to WWAY. "The difference with this request is that the production company requested the use of a larger meter and because of that, CFPUA required additional measures be taken, such as the notification and having CFPUA staff on site during the activity."

CFPUA says it hand delivered notices to approximately 600 downtown residences and businesses in the affected area, which ranges from Hanover Street to Orange Street between 4th and Water Streets.

Valade said she believed but was not certain the production would be charged the typical non-resident consumption charge of $3.96/1,000 gallons of water used.

During the production time, CFPUA says customers in the area may experience periods of low pressure and/or may see discolored water due to the increased water usage and significant amount of flow. Customers that do experience discoloration are advised to run the cold water for approximately three to five minutes to allow the lines to clear.
