TOPSAIL BEACH -- Not many of us can say we've lived and worked in the same place for more than half a century. One Topsail Beach couple made their mark on the town. The Jenkins have devoted their lives together to giving back to the people of topsail island. Sonny and Doris Jenkins recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. They've lived in Topsail Beach for the majority of their 50 years together. Doris said, "It's just a nice, comfortable place to live." Sonny said, "We've really worked at it and we've really enjoyed it. Met a lot of people, a lot of good people." Doris has been the postmistress since 1963. Right next-door Sonny has his own craft shop, where he works alone to create hand-made woodwork. Doris said, "We visit back and forth. I take care of his place when he can't and sometimes he'll come in and sit if we have to run out for a second." That's not all. Doris runs a skating rink on the top floor of the building, a rink they built together. Sonny said, "The best memories are building this building right here, the skating rink, because we both love it so much." Sonny was fire chief for about 15 years in the '60s and '70s. He's still active in the town. He frequently cooks dinner for the police department. At 73 and 69 years old, the Jenkins have no plans of slowing down. Doris said, "We've always had our ups and downs for 50 years and just enjoy each other." Sonny said, "I hope we've got a lot more years here on the island." It's evident how much the Jenkins are loved and appreciated on the island. Many people were come to the post office to drop off anniversary cards and presents and give best wishes.
