FIRST ON 3: WPD resolves standoff after man threatens suicide

WILMINGTON, NC -- A Wilmington man was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical center Thursday night after a more than three-hour standoff with police.

Lucy Crockett, a police spokeswoman, says the man had called a crisis hotline around 7 p.m., threatening to kill himself or provoke police to shoot him. Crockett says the man did indicate that he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Wilmington Police patrol officers, detectives and special operations responded to the 200 block of N. 31st St. in Wilmington. Both ends of the street were blocked off for the duration of the standoff.

Officers finally got in contact with the man by phone and the situation was resolved around 10:30 p.m.
