Airlie Gardens to host a fall kayak 'eco-tour'

READ MORE:

Airlie Gardens' Environmental Education Program hosts a fall kayak 'eco-tour' Sunday, September 30th, from 10am-12pm. The tour themed "A Creek Comes Alive", will guide novice or seasoned paddlers through Bradley Creek and focuses on the flora, fauna, and ecosystem of Bradley Creek along with discussions concerning coastal environmental issues.

Kayakers will explore the unique salt marsh ecosystem to discover its importance, its threats, and how an individual can get involved in conserving marsh ecosystems. Participants should be interested in understanding and appreciating this natural resource as well as be able to endure mild physical activity. Participants should also dress appropriately for the weather.

Airlie Gardens, located on Airlie Road near Wrightsville Beach, is 67-acres of quintessential Southern gardens with access to Bradley Creek and 10-acres of freshwater lakes. Over 100,000 azaleas, 3,000 camellias, statuary, and the Historic Airlie Oak adorn the landscape. This once privately-owned garden was purchased for the public by New Hanover County in 1999. For more information, check out http://www.airliegardens.org

Registration is $50.00, and is limited to twelve (12) participants per tour. Registration includes a kayak from Salt Marsh Kayak Company, personal floatation device (PFD), paddle, guides, garden admission, and snack. Contact the Environmental Education Program, 798-7564 to reserve a space, or e-mail nmitchell@nhcgov.com
