JACKSONVILLE, NC (AP) -- The Marines are going green at Camp Lejeune as solar farms are popping up across the base in eastern North Carolina.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reports that facilities engineer manager Thomas Burton says the photovoltaic panels are being put up wherever there is space. That includes building rooftops, fields not being used for training and in canopies over parking lots.

The idea is to save electricity costs at the base. Officials estimate the solar arrays will save about $500,000 a year.

The most visible solar farm is near the base's main gate. That array has the capacity to generate enough electricity to power 100 homes for a year.
