Sheriff investigates shooting death in Mount Airy

MOUNT AIRY, NC (AP) -- The SBI and sheriff's deputies are investigating a shooting death during a domestic assault in Surry County.

Officials say officers found 41-year-old Christopher Montgomery Tulley dead when they arrived at home in Mount Airy on Sunday night.

Deputies say a teen saw Tully assaulting his wife, who is the teen's mother. The teen tried to stop the attack and when he was unable to do so, he shot Tully in the head with a .410 shotgun.

Neither the woman nor the teen were identified.

Deputies say the teen is cooperating with investigators.

Sheriff Graham Atkinson says investigators will meet with prosecutors to determine if any charges will be filed. But Atkinson says the teen may have saved his mother's life.
