Police say Wilmington gas station robbed twice by same person

READ MORE: Police say Wilmington gas station robbed twice by same person

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Wilmington Police say the Murphy USA gas station on Sigmon Road has been robbed twice in less than two weeks.

"Last Wednesday, we had someone come in and display a handgun and rob the clerk,” Wilmington Police Spokesman Kevin Smith said. “This morning at about 6 am we had almost an identical crime occur at the same location."

Employees at the gas station say they believe the same person robbed the store twice.

The company that owns this gas station does not allow its employees to speak on camera but we did talk to a manager by phone. She says the gas station is taking extra precautions to keep the staff and the customers safe.

The manager says right now the company is considering staffing more than one person to man the register, the pumps may open later than their original opening time at 5 am, and the register will only have about twenty dollars in the drawer so that there's not a lot for the robber to take. She hopes taking these additional measures may help keep the thief away. Police say that may be a good idea.

"If they get policies established that other companies have already that create less of an environment that's inviting to criminals then they make themselves less of a target,” said Smith.

If you have any information on this robbery, please contact the Wilmington Police Department at 910-341-7800.
