Wrightsville Beach mayor supports off-shore wind energy

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Wrightsville Beach Mayor David Cignotti says he supports the production of off-shore wind energy.

The group Environment North Carolina is pushing to extend federal tax credits for wind projects set to expire at the end of the year.

Mayor Cignotti said he is most interested in the positive environmental effects turbines will have on Wrightsville Beach.

"To me the big impact is protecting the environment," Cignotti said. "Our coastal communities rely on a pristine environment. Our water must be clean in order to have tourism flourish, and I feel like wind energy would protect that."

Though the initial investment in turbines and wind farms would be large, Cignotti says it would pay for itself and be fairly inexpensive in the long term.
