JACKSONVILLE, NC (WWAY) -- The East Columbus Gators dominated the first half of Monday's game against the SW Onslow Stallions. The home team trailed East Columbus 20-10 at the half, but Shak Pershey scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter for SW Onslow. The final touchdown scored with 22 seconds to go.

Note: SW Onslow actually tied the game late in the fourth quarter at 20-20, but the Stallions chose to take the points off the board after an East Columbus roughing the kicker penalty. East Columbus drops to 3-2 with the loss. SW Onslow improves to 4-1.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW sports release) -- UNCW head baseball coach Mark Scalf has announced the 2013 schedule for the Seahawks, one that includes 32 home games including contests against College World Series participants Kent State and Stony Brook.

Included in that total of 32 games at Brooks Field are nine games against teams that played in the NCAA tournament. The Seahawks will play a total of 14 games against 2012 NCAA participants including College of Charleston, San Diego, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, NC State and UNC Chapel Hill.

The Seahawks open the season with 14 their first 16 games at Brooks Field.

In Colonial Athletic Association play, the Seahawks open at James Madison on March 15 and host Georgia State the following week on March 22 to open the home conference slate. In a rematch of the 2012 CAA Championship, UNCW hosts Delaware on Apr. 12-14.

Kent State and Stony Brook made magical runs to Omaha by winning the Gary and Coral Cables Regionals, respectively. KSU then bounced Oregon in three games in Eugene, Ore., while USB eliminated Louisiana State, also in three games, in Baton Rouge. NC State, meanwhile, eliminated the Seahawks in the Raleigh Regional before ending Vanderbilt’s season. The Wolfpack was then knocked out in the Gainesville Super Regional by Florida.

UNCW will also face off with Lehigh, Elon, Davidson, Charleston Southern and VCU in non-conference games.

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) -- Ryan Morris has resigned as the Topsail baseball head coach. Topsail High School sported a 20-5 record in 2012. The Pirates lost in the second round of the state playoff against North Brunswick.

CHAPEL HILL, NC (WWAY) -- The UNC Tar Heels will host East Carolina on the gridiron on Saturday. Click play video to see what Hoggard grad Jonathan Cooper had to say on Monday about playing the Pirates.

RALEIGH, NC (NC State sports release) -- NC State freshman basketball player Rodney Purvis has been granted permission to compete immediately for the Wolfpack in a decision handed down by the NCAA Committee on Initial Eligibility Waivers on Monday.

The committee, comprised of campus administrators from across the nation, reviewed an appeal submitted by NC State on Purvis’ behalf to determine his competition status. The committee had previously determined that Purvis could attend classes with athletics aid and practice with the Wolfpack during the upcoming season.

“I’m really happy for Rodney,” said head coach Mark Gottfried. “It’s been a difficult situation and he’s handled the entire matter with class. Now he can move forward. I’d also like to thank the NCAA for its thoughtful consideration on this decision.”

Purvis echoed his coach’s sentiment.

“I’m really excited about the decision that the NCAA came to today,” said Purvis. “I appreciate the hard work of everybody involved and I’m looking forward to focusing on school and basketball.”

NC State opens the season on Nov. 3 with an exhibition game at PNC Arena against Belmont Abbey.

ATLANTA, GA (AP) -- Matt Ryan threw his 100th career touchdown pass, Roddy White had 102 yards receiving and the Atlanta Falcons defeated the Denver Broncos and error-prone quarterback Peyton Manning 27-21 on Monday night.

The Falcons (2-0) took advantage of three interceptions by Manning in the first quarter and raced to a 20-0 lead. Manning brought the Broncos (1-1) back with two fourth-quarter scoring drives, but it wasn't enough to make up for his awful start.

The only other time he's been intercepted three times in the opening quarter was with the Colts in a 2007 game at San Diego.

Ryan was much more efficient, completing 24 of 36 for 219 yards. He hooked up with Tony Gonzalez for a 1-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, then went to White on a 4-yard score in the third period.
