READ MORE:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - State Capitol Police Chief Scott Hunter, who came to the department after nearly 20 years with the N.C. Highway Patrol, has died. He was 49.

Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Patty McQuillan said Hunter died Friday after a long illness. He had remained on the job until recently.

Hunter, who grew up in Laurens, S.C., became State Capitol police chief in 2003 following 18 years with the patrol. He worked as a field trooper from 1985 through 1993, and also headed the patrol's recruitment efforts and the Traffic Safety Information Program.

As chief, Hunter oversaw the department's move in 2009 from the Department of Administration to what is now the Department of Public Safety.

Hunter is survived by his wife and three children. Funeral arrangements are not complete.
