WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – A Wilmington police officer was injured early Saturday morning after being rear ended by a drunk driver. According to Lucy Crockett of the Wilmington Police Department around 4:37 a.m. Officer Frederick Elder was driving a marked unit in the 6100 block of Market Street when he was rear ended by 27-year-old Nicholas Lamastus of Wilmington. Officer Elder was transported to the Cape Fear Hospital with minor injuries. An investigation by the WPD Traffic Unit revealed that Lamastus was driving while impaired at the time of the collision. Lamastus was arrested and charged with DWI and failure to reduce speed. He was later released on bond. Both vehicles were determined to have been a total loss.
