CHAPEL HILL, NC (AP) -- The chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is making it clear that his decision to resign is final and that he has a lot work ahead before he leaves the school in June.

Faculty, employees, students and the school's Board of Trustees have asked Chancellor Holden Thorp to stay. At a board meeting Thursday, Thorp reiterated his decision to resign, and the board announced a search committee will meet Oct. 5.

Thorp announced his resignation Sept. 17 after two years of scandals that include football players accepting gifts, no-show classes, instructors who didn't teach and fundraisers who used donated money for personal travel.

Thorp says he wants to make sure the next chancellor doesn't have to handle the same issues that the board is now confronting.
