LELAND, NC (WWAY) -- The Leland Police Department is the first department in Brunswick County to offer text tip services to its citizens.
Beginning next week, the Leland Police Department will launching tip411, an internet-based tool that lets the public text message anonymous tips to police. It also lets police respond back creating a two-way anonymous "chat" in both English and Spanish.
Police say tip411 is not a substitute for dialing 911. If you are calling in an emergency you should always call 911 for an immediate response.
Reserved exclusively for Public Safety purposes and powered by CitizenObserver, a St. Paul, Minnesota Company, tip411 puts a new crime fighting tool into the hands of the Leland community for all ages and demographics.
Leland Police say this is part of their new focus to actively engage the public and encourage the citizens to play an active role in keeping neighborhoods and schools safer. Soon, every marked patrol vehicle will be outfitted with a decal with the tip code that anonymous tips can be sent to.
Starting next week, anyone with a cell phone can send an anonymous tip to the Leland Police Department by way of text.
