Signs warning of bridge closure still misleading drivers

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- As the NCDOT prepares for another weekend of closing the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, the signs alerting drivers of the closures still have misleading messages.

Currently, signs say the bridge will be closed 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. this Friday through Monday. That has some drivers thinking the bridge will be open during daytime hours, which is not true. It will be closed all weekend.

"The contractor for the signs is out of Winston-Salem, and to re-rogram the signs he has to come down from
Winston-Salem to actually program the signs manually," NC DOT Assistant Resident Engineer Ben Hughes said.

The DOT says the contractor owns the signs, so he is the only person who can reprogram them. The signs are expected to be changed Tuesday night.

The bridge will also be closed tonight at 8 p.m. and will reopen tomorrow at 5 a.m.
