WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- It has been a long road for Mike and Carmen Mathews and their five new babies, but after more than a month in Arizona the family has finally come home.

Carleigh, Lorna, Layton, Eason, and last but not least, Rucker. After months away, the Mathews came home to North Carolina, but now with five more in tow, two girls and three baby boys.

“We never had one to take care of so taking care of five really won't be much different to us I guess,” Mike Mathews says. “A lot of work.”

The quintuplets were born last month after the Mathews uprooted their lives in Leland for a world-renowned specialist in Arizona. A rocky road, marked with fertility drugs and miscarriages, eventually led to five healthy heartbeats during an ultrasound. They were borth at 34 weeks.

“The name that their mom and dad gave them in the beginning 'the Mathews Miracles,' has proven to be very true, because we feel like it is a miracle in our family to have these five children,” says Bonnie Garris, aunt of the quintuplets.

On Wednesday, the family landed in Wilmington on a donated air medical transport flight. All babies are happy and healthy, but baby Rucker who weighed just 2 lbs, 2 oz at birth needed more medical attention. He was immediately transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

“He’s just small,” Carmen Mathews says. “So he has to fatten up so he can maintain his temperature and then he's coming home.”

With a new 12 passenger van, and lots of family and friends to kiss all fifty tiny fingers and toes, the Mathews Miracles are in good hands.
