New Hanover Co. Sheriff using inmate labor to cut costs

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- New Hanover County Jail inmates were behind another type of bars Friday morning, helping out the Sheriff's Animal Services Unit.

The inmates lent their skills with a brush by giving the kennels at Animal Control a fresh coat of paint. The Sheriff's Office estimates it will save $3,000-4,000.

"It's good. It has the inmates come out and get a little exercise by painting, and we reap the benefits of not having to hire an outside contractor," Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jerry Brewer said.

The Sheriff's Office is trying to figure out more ways it can utilize inmate labor to save costs, such as work at the jail and other county buildings.
