Minimal damage reported in Hurricane Sandy aftermath

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- As the last rain bands from Hurricane Sandy blow ashore the surf is still pushing inland flooding some areas on Pleasure Island.

"We had some flooding on canal drive, but that's expected” said Tim Owens, Carolina Beach town manager. “We had a little bit of over wash on Carolina Beach Avenue and probably some erosion but we really haven't had a chance to assess that yet."

Many businesses in Carolina Beach stayed open during the storm including Kate’s Pancake House, which stayed open to serve their famous hurricane omelets.

"There were several weddings on the island and they all were kind of like you're staying open right? So we stayed open for them and also our regulars” said Kate Weiss, owner of Kate’s Pancakes.

Sandy brought more than wind and rain to Pleasure Island as surfers hit the beaches hoping to catch the large waves produced by the storm.

"I'm not going to lie I was pretty nervous out there,” said surfer Matt Kelly. “I've got a boogie board with no leash so if I miss a wave I've got to go in and get the board every single time so I've got to make sure it's the right wave."

Though Hurricane Sandy is pushing farther off to the north, Carolina Beach officials say they will continue to monitor the weather system closely to make sure that all is clear before assessing beach erosion damage.
