WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) -- After three years of waiting testimony began in the Danny Ray Nobles murder trial.
The opening statements in the Nobles trial were telling of the prosecution and defense’s game plan in the murder trial of Danny Ray Nobles.
District Attorney Jon David recreated the murder scene for jurors, describing how Thomas Lee Melvin ran out of his shoes while fleeing from Danny Ray Nobles. David then described how Nobles shot Melvin twelve times at point blank range.
Defense Attorney Scott Dorman argued that Nobles, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, believed he was acting in self-defense while shooting Melvin.
The prosecution is expected to introduce police dash cam video from the night of the murder, which shows Nobles demeanor as he turned himself into police at the magistrate’s office.
