WILMINGTON, NC (NEWS RELEASE) -- CFPUA Operations crews have responded to and stopped a wastewater spill in the Country Haven area adjacent to the 8000 block of Market Street. At approximately 7:45 a.m. today, CFPUA staff discovered the spill while visiting the site to conduct routine maintenance. The CFPUA crew took action to stop the flow from the pipe, which appears to have been previously damaged.

Service in the area has not been affected. During its repairs, CFPUA crews shut down the outer outbound travel lane of Market Street between Marsh Oaks and Sweetwater Drive. Traffic was shifted to one lane in this area in order to establish a safe work zone. To help with the evening rush hour, CFPUA crews have made a temporary fix and lifted the work zone through 11 p.m. tonight. At that time, crews will reclose the same parts of the road and make the permanent repair in time for the morning rush hour.

The estimated total spill volume is 2,500 gallons and the spill reached surface waters that are a tributary to Page’s Creek. CFPUA environmental and Safety Management staff is on scene performing water quality monitoring to determine the impact of the spill. This incident has been reported to the North Carolina Division of Water Quality.
