Man arrested after standoff with NC police

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) -- A Winston-Salem man has been arrested after a standoff with police. No one was hurt.

Officers were called to a home shortly after 5 pm Tuesday. Police Chief Scott Cunningham says 53-year-old Dwayne Brett Jessup had called 911 repeatedly.

Cunningham says Jessup pointed a long-barreled weapon at the officers as they approached the house. The chief says one of his officers fired two rounds at Jessup as they retreated.

Cunningham says Jessup was alone in the house and surrendered about an hour later after talking with negotiators. He has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.

He's being held in the Forsyth County jail. It's not clear if he has a lawyer.

The officers are on administrative duty while the department conducts an internal investigation.
