Estep, Covil talk NHCS redistricting

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The school board race went to the Republicans on Election Night.

First-time candidates Lisa Estep and Tammy Covil will join 12-year incumbent Jeannette Nichols to make up a board completely comprised of Republicans.

"I think that we were probably most vocal on neighborhood schools and on the positive tracks we want to take," said Estep.

Now, with the makeup of the board shifting, some are wondering if changes could be coming to their child's school.

"Parents overwhelmingly want the ability to send their children to the school that's closest to their home," said Covil.

"You should be able to go to the school closest to you if at all possible," said Estep

Estep and Covil have very vocally supported neighborhood schools, but though they say that it should be the first option available to students and parents, they do not necessarily think it has to be the only option.

"Title I schools or low-income families who struggle with helping their children- We do need to address that," said Covil.

"If they don't choose to want to be in that neighborhood for whatever reason then they need another option," said Estep.

While Estep does not see any changes in the near future, she believes the board's view is united.

"I do believe that all of the current board members and the new board members are in agreement that neighborhood schools are what we need to be doing and continuing," said Estep.
