Description:

Given by Wilmington native William Kenan, Jr. as a memorial to his parents. The fountain was designed by Carrere & Hastings of New York.

This fountain is a place you can go to visit the rich history of Wilmington and also a place to take pictures as well. The fountain stands 24/7 and people drive by it daily.

The Kenan Memorial Fountain, located at the center of Fifth Avenue and Market Street, was given to the City of Wilmington by William Rand Kenan, Jr. in 1921 as a memorial to his parents. The fountain had a pool at street level until 1953 when the State Highway Commission suggested the fountain be moved. Rather than moving the fountain from its unique location, the City Council voted to reduce the size of the fountain, install spotlights and widen the street to two lanes.

On one of your tours in downtown Wilmington make sure you stop at this fountain and read about its rich history.

Widen the street?
Install lights?
Reduce the size of the fountain?

All of this in 1953.
It's time to move the darned thing out of a major thorough fair. its 2012 for pete's sake - since 1921? I wonder how many horse and buggies hit it? Or maybe a few kids on bicycles hit it in 53.
But now? Thousands of cars per day?
Move it to Schoninger's property down town and call it the Dead Baseball Referendum Fountain of Tears and call it a day.
