Mother charged with trying to kill daughter, cat

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A New Hanover County woman is out of the hospital and now in jail charged with trying to kill her daughter and cat. Jeannie L. Marvel, 49, is charged with attempted first degree murder and felonious cruelty to animals.

On September 9, deputies responded to 9408 Scratch Ct. for an unresponsive female. A family friend called 911 for her friend, Marvel, whom she had been trying to make contact with. Once the friend entered the home, she found Marvel on the floor and unresponsive. She also noticed Marvel's nine-year-old daughter and the family cat appeared to be under the influence of an impairing substance or possibly poisoned. Marvel and the child were transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Detectives got a search warrant for the home and continued their investigation. After completing their investigation, a warrant was issued for Marvel's arrest.

Marvel was under medical observation until Friday, when detectives arrested her and took her before the magistrate.

Marvel's daughter was treated and released into DSS custody. The cat was treated and is under veterinarian care.

Marvel is in jail under $500,000 secured bond.
