ONLY ON 3: Chadbourn town councilman asked to resign

CHADBOURN, NC (WWAY) -- It was a war of words Tuesday night in the small town of Chadbourn. One town councilman was at the center of controversy during a meeting and some say it's time for him to go.

An embarrassment to the town of Chadbourn. That is what residents and even some town leaders are saying about Councilman Edwin Roberts.

"Sir, I'm here to ask you tonight to resign," said Dee Long, who lives in Chadbourn and spoke to Roberts during the public comments session of the meeting. "You do not need to represent me or anyone else in this room. You are not a favorable member of council. You're not doing us any good. You're doing us harm, so subsequently you need to leave."

Chadbourn Town Council had several issues to discuss, but Councilman Roberts seemed to take over the meeting. While Long publicly asked Roberts to resign from the board, Frances Hayes says Roberts needs to realize who he's working for.

"He has no regard for Chadbourn really," Hayes said. "Everything that he does is an agenda for himself it seems like.”"

Also during public comments, Hayes told the board about personal issues she has been having with Roberts. She says Roberts, who lives next door to her elderly mother, has repeatedly called Chadbourn Police because leaves and household items were on his property. Hayes says her mother suffers from Alzheimer's and dementia, and Roberts's behavior is inappropriate.

Other council members sided with Hayes, telling Roberts to be more courteous to his neighbors and just let the issue go.

"They can say what they want," Roberts said. "I'm doing by best for the town. It doesn't really bother me."

Roberts also said he's not surprised by the negative comments and is not going to consider resigning. Hayes says she hopes Roberts leaves before his term is up three years from now.

"I'm 51 and have lived here since I was ten years old, and I don't think I have ever met anyone like him," Hayes said.

At the end of the meeting Roberts asked council to discuss hiring an additional police officer and policies regarding the disposal of yard or household materials on another person's property. Both of the discussions erupted in arguments among board members.
