NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- The votes have been canvassed and the results are in. The official results show incumbent Mike McIntyre beat challenger David Rouzer in the race for the state's 7th Congressional District.
In a statement McIntyre says, "I'm honored that the voters of eastern North Carolina have put their trust in me to represent them in Washington. I thank them for their confidence and pledge to continue to put their interests first.
McIntyre goes on to say, "Our country faces many challenges and we need less partisan rhetoric and more cooperation in Washington. I will continue my work to lower the deficit, cut government spending and red tape so small businesses can flourish and we can create more jobs."
The results show McIntyre beat Rouzer by only 655 votes out of the more than 336,000 votes that were cast in the 12 county district. Since that's less than a one percent margin, Rouzer can call for a recount.
Rouzer's camp sent out a statement saying that they would release a statement early next week regarding the final results.
