North Brunswick Chamber loads up donations for Sandy victims

LELAND, NC (WWAY) -- Brunswick County residents are banding together to show their support for people affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce is known for the work it does in the Cape Fear, but it's the work it's doing in the northeast, in New York and New Jersey, that is sure to give many a reason to give thanks this Thanksgiving.

"I knew it was something that needed to be done, and the folks up there need some help, so I decided to go ahead and do what we could do," volunteer Terry Neilon said.

"Their vision was to have the Chamber come together to collect for relief for the victims of Hurricane Sandy," Marry Anne Fagerquist with the North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce said.

And collect they did. The donations filled a trailer full of food, clothing and other essential items to send to the hurricane ravaged northeast. Many of the donations came from complete strangers.

"It's a very close-to-home situation," Fagerquist said. "These people are identifying with their family members who are still homeless. They don't have any clothing. They don't have any food, so it's a very impassioned plea."

Though the storm has passed and relief is on the way, they want to deliver a few smiles this Thanksgiving Day.

"When you stop and think about that many of the facilities that they could go to have been destroyed and washed away, so we're doing what we can and we're hoping it will be there for Thanksgiving," Fagerquist said.

The supplies being trucked north have been earmarked for residents of Brooklyn and the Rockaways in New York.

Plans for a large clothing drive for those affected by Sandy are in the works.
