Some voters confused by polling stations

READ MORE: Some voters confused by polling stations

WILMINGTON -- Poll workers said turnout was a bit lower than expected. They said some voters were confused about where they should go.

When many Wilmington residents went to their usual polling station to vote, they were greeted by signs telling them they could not longer cast their ballots there.

As required by law the Board of Elections sent out notices to voters. But many say the change still came as a surprise.

Voter Hannah Middleton said, "I live on 14th Street, but when I came to vote, I know the arts center had a little sign, but they didn't tell you where to go."

Voter Joseph Boyer said, "My wife left the house a little early on the way to vote... And then, ten minutes later she called me and said 'Where to we vote at?' I said, 'at the arts center.' She said, 'No, it's closed."

Earlier this year the New Hanover County Board of Elections changed several voting precincts because of parking issues, handicap access and the desire to use public rather than private buildings.

But not all voters had a tough time casting their ballots. June Tilden said she knew about the changes and had no trouble at all.

Tilden said, "We received written notice some time ago, it's just as convenient to vote here and it's a very pleasant place to be."

If you're confused about where to go here are the locations.

If you used to go to Masonboro Baptist Church, you now go to Parsley Elementary School.

If you've gone to Cape Fear Academy in the past you now go to the Shrine Club.

If Snipes Elementary was your previous polling station your new one is Freeman Elementary.

Voters who used to go to Forest Hills School now go to First Christian Church.

If you live in the downtown area and used to go to Johnson Elementary or the Community Arts Center you now come to the Schwartz Center at Cape Fear Community College.

Voters who previously went to the Sunset Park School and the National Guard Armory now go only to the armory.

Sunset Park School is no longer a polling station.

If you're not sure which precinct you're in you can call the Board of Elections at 798-7330.
