READ MORE:

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) -- The head of a North Carolina Latin gang who twice ran for Greensboro's City Council faces a long prison sentence after his conviction on federal racketeering charges.

Jorge Cornell was convicted Wednesday in Winston-Salem of conspiracy to commit racketeering, committing a violent crime in aid of racketeering, and use of a firearm in a violent crime. Cornell's brother and another man were convicted of conspiring to commit racketeering. Another Cornell brother and two other defendants were acquitted.

Cornell leads the Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation in North Carolina. Federal prosecutors accused the men of conspiring to commit murder, kidnapping, arson and extortion since 2005.

Cornell kept a high profile with news conferences calling for peace among Greensboro gangs and for dismantling the police gang unit.
