WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Salvation Army Angel Tree in Wilmington is packed with angels that need your help. It's been said that the best gift is giving, and the Salvation Army hopes that people here in the Cape Fear agree. "People like to be personal when they give," Salvation Army Maj. Virginia Watts said. "People like helping people." It does not get more personal than choosing a child to help. That's exactly what you can do with the Salvation Army Angel Tree. It's simple. Just pick the angel that you want from the tree, and get shopping. "You have here that you are adopting a little girl," Maj. Watts said showing off one of the tags on the tree representing a child in need. "Her name is Aileen, and she is 10 years old. You take this and you say, 'Oh she wears a size 12 shirt. I can go buy her a size 12 shirt.'" This year, the Salvation Army of Wilmington reached out to surrounding counties to give back. Children from Bladen, Columbus, Pender, Brunswick and New Hanover counties are all included in the stack of angels on trees throughout the Port City this year. Because it went to more counties, there are more angels on the tree this year, but the Salvation Army says there are also more gifts at this point in the season than in years past. The Salvation Army says it is grateful for those who have already participated, but they still need more help. Participants say there's no better way to celebrate the holiday than giving back to those who may not have a Christmas without the donations. "It's a good opportunity to show the real christmas spirit, and it's a good opportunity to help people," donor Sherry Carter said. There are Angel Trees all over the Cape Fear, but the main tree is by Belk at Independence Mall. Unwrapped gifts for the angels are due back to the Salvation Army by December 15. Sometimes giving comes with a reward, like 103.7 The Bone, WWAY and the Salvation Army's One-day blitz at Krispy Kreme. Bring five cans of non-perishable items or $5 donations from 5:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Monday, December 17, to restock the food pantry, and we'll give you a dozen hot Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Many of us from WWAY will be there to collect the food and thank you for donating.
