NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY) -- A gas leak on S. College Road in Wilmington left the road shut down and drivers stuck in traffic. While the wait may have been bad for drivers, it was worse for students who were stuck at school for hours at Cape Fear Academy. Students who were at the school when the gas line broke were locked down and stuck for hours. "We could look out the windows and see the gas coming up," said eighth-grader Watson Caviness. "So at first I was kind of worried about it because I was like, 'What if this is a gas that could blow up or something?'" Caviness was one of about 100 Cape Fear Academy students who were at school when a truck ruptured an eight-inch natural gas line on S. College Road in Wilmington Wednesday afternoon. The school went into lockdown around 4 P.M., and no one was allowed to enter or leave the campus, leaving students stuck for about two and a half hours. "I got reassured and then it was a long time of waiting. I was just only mad about the waiting part," said Caviness. While students were waiting inside, outside anxious parents were also counting the minutes. "The longer I wait the more nervous I get," said one parent. Students and parents were not the only ones kept waiting. A two-mile stretch of College Road in front of the school was closed to traffic causing major jams. Around 6:30, students were bussed to the nearby Wal-Mart to be reunited with their waiting parents. And for all the commotion going on outside, for the students, it was just the end of a long day at school. "It was just like [my mom] was picking me up from school," said one student. College Road reopened to traffic around 8 p.m. Crews have stopped the leak and Cape Fear Academy is set to be on a normal schedule Thursday.
