FIRST ON 3: Bob Lewis named Carolina Beach Mayor

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- There was a promotion Tuesday night at Carolina Beach town hall, but shockingly it was none of the five candidates interviewing for the open town council seats.

After a motion by town council member Sarah Friede councilman Bob Lewis accepted a promotion to become mayor of Carolina Beach.

"As a part time situation on council we looked at this and everybody looked at who would want to be appointed,” says Bob Lewis. “The benefit is I only have one more year on my term and the other two members of council have three more years on their term. I don't really feel comfortable just being appointed to the position. If I really wanted to be the mayor I would of ran for the position last year."

Potential town councilman Duke Hagestrom says that the move was necessary for the town to move on from the exodus of former mayor Ray Rothrock, town manager Tim Owens, and council member Lonnie Lashley.

"I would not call it starting over or a fresh start I would call it a little bit of a healing process just to kind of fix what was going on here but more importantly this is an opportunity to continue the things that have happened,” says Duke Hagestrom.

Steve Shuttlesworth will continue act as mayor pro tem until the first meeting of January when Bob Lewis will be sworn in as mayor.
