Suspect connected to sweepstakes robbery surrenders

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A fifth suspect wanted in connection to the robbery of a Brunswick County business has turned herself into investigators.

The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office says Ronchekala Shawntae Veness, also known as "Koot," 32, of Loris, SC, turned herself in yesterday. She was released on $20,000 bond.

Veness is charged with conspiracy to commit robbery in connection to the November 29 robbery of Winner's World, a sweepstakes parlor in Calabash. Four other people have been charged in the robbery. Investigators are still searching for one more unidentified suspect.

During the early-morning robbery, a customer in the store had a heart attack and died. At the time, District Attorney Jon David said his office was investigating to see if there were any legal grounds to pursue murder or manslaughter charges against the robbery suspects. No one has been charged with those crimes.
