Having twice been approached late at night by very suspicious-looking thugs in two separate downtown parking lots, I say to those who come to downtown Wilmington to be extra cautious.
I'm brawny--a weightlifter--and I think that's what made the thugs just a little hesitant to approach me up close, but they were definitely up to no good and checking me out like a predator would.
Trust your instincts. Never enter a parking lot at night without your car keys in your hand. Be hypervigilant. If you see someone approaching you who might be capable of doing harm to you, push the horn button and let the horn blast away.
Better advice: Never enter a parking lot in downtown ILM after 10 P.M. You will be putting your life at risk.
