WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Jayqwon Rontell Canty, age 23, of Wilmington and a passenger ran a four-wheeler off 900 Greenfield Street Friday evening. Wilmington police officers began preparing citations for reckless operation of a motor vehicle and no helmet, while another officer ran the vehicle identification number. The vehicle returned stolen in 2004 according to one database, and was therefore towed due to the need for further investigation. Canty and the passenger were released on the citations.
Another officer went to the tow yard to follow up on the discrepancy in the records. While looking for a matching vehicle identification number in another location on the vehicle, the officer removed the seat and found 100 bindles of heroin. The charging officer then went to the magistrate’s office to secure warrants for Canty. While he was there, an employee of the New Hanover County Sheriff’s office discovered Canty trying to retrieve the four-wheeler from the tow yard.
Canty was arrested and placed under $1 million bond. The offenses are trafficking in opium or heroin, possession of a stolen vehicle, and traffic citation.
