Christmas tree recycling underway

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The holidays are winding down, and Christmas tree recycling is underway in New Hanover County and other communities around our area.

The county's Environmental Management Department asks residents to take trees to one of three locations.

You can drop off your trees through February 6 at Ogden Park, Myrtle Grove Middle School and the New Hanover County Landfill. Make sure to remove all lights and decorations.

Topsail Beach will collect used Christmas trees and put them at the toe of sand dunes. The purpose is to collect sand through Aeolian action of the wind moving the sand particles that are captured by sand fencing and or other vegetative materials. This will help build the dunes that experience harsh wave action and escarpment during the winter ocean movements and Nor'easters. All Christmas trees, except artificial, may be placed at Town property at the Corner of Davis and Anderson in the marked area, immediately after Christmas and for the first few weeks of January.

Holden Beach will also use your old tanenbaums for beach nourishment. Drop them off next to the town's Recycling Center under the water tower.
